Spiritual Counseling for Beginners is a course I began teaching in the early 2000’s to help people entering the field either as laypersons, experienced mystics, or professional conventional therapists. It’s a basic overview of what the job is and how to do it in a way that is both sensitive and legally above board.
When I first started teaching this, the social and political climate in the west was bad, but we had no idea at the time of the barrage of b.s. that was coming our way. Social media has made the spread of misinformation and disinformation very much easier than it was when one had to piece together a page in html or at least know someone who could, to advertise. So it has become even more crucial to educate future spiritual counselors in sound practices so that they can not only serve their patrons well, but vet associates and colleagues to avoid scammers and being associated with such.
Full disclosure of biases, I am teaching from the perspective of someone who is at the core, agnostic and practicing diaspora Obeah and Motherland rooted Afroscientific Spirituality or African Spiritual Science. I do however, attempt to cover all bases, include all belief systems, and allow for all levels of mystical belief. All are welcome who come in peace.
